February 2017 Chapter Meeting
Flowcharts, Swimlanes, TaskMaps, and more: What is the best way to map a business process?
Microsoft Visio includes 15 different templates for mapping business processes. In addition, there are Visio add-ins from other companies that are designed to make it easier to create more meaningful, content-rich process maps. This presentation will summarize the key advantages and disadvantages of four types of process maps – flowcharts, swimlane diagrams, BPMN diagrams, and TaskMaps – allowing you to make an informed selection for your organization. As you view examples of different styles of process maps, you will also learn simple techniques for turning Visio diagrams into business intelligence dashboards.
Scott A. Helmers is a Partner at the Harvard Computing Group, a software and consulting firm that assists clients with understanding and implementing business process solutions. He is a co-inventor of TaskMap (www.taskmap.com), a Visio add-in that allows anyone to document, analyze, and improve their business processes.
Scott has worked with clients in ten countries on projects involving process mapping and redesign, knowledge management, and technology training. For more than a decade, he was an Adjunct Professor at both Northeastern and Boston Universities.
Scott has been named a Microsoft Valuable Professional (MVP) for Visio every year since 2008 and is the only Visio MVP in the US. He is author of four books from Microsoft Press: Visio 2016 Step by Step, Visio 2013 Step by Step, Visio 2010 Step by Step, and Business Intelligence in Microsoft® SharePoint® 2013 (coauthor).
